How To Get Around in Vietnam
Like hotels, transportation is considerably less than in other countries like the U.S. It won’t break your bank to take a taxi from the airport to the center of town, in fact, it will probably be cheap to you. It’s important to choose good, reliable companies. Motorbikes reign supreme on the roads of Vietnam, so consider renting one or using a ride hailing like Grab. Flying about the country is easy with its multiple airports.

Vietnam is home to an amazing culture of nearly 100 million people (96.5 in 2019). The are spread around the mountainous, tropical, and coastal country from north to south.
The Vietnamese language is spoken throughout, with some variations in how it sounds. English will be spoken in tourist destinations by enough people to get by, although it’s rewarding to learn a few phrases.
Often spelled locally (and by the United Nations) as Viet Nam, the typical English combines the two into Vietnam. A lot of cities (and words) around Vietnam share this dual-spelling, such as:
- Ha Noi – Hanoi
- Da Lat – Dalat
- Sa Pa – Sapa
- Da Nang – Danang
- Ha Long – Halong
The local currency is the Dong and the best place to probably exchange and receive the money is out of an ATM. So long, you have a friendly bank that doesn’t charge foreign ATM fees, like Charles Schwab. Otherwise, you can go to each of the currency teller stands at the airport and get their top rate, and exchange dollars to dong.
