Red Fox

Are there foxes in Vietnam?

ShareTweet

It might be hard to imagine that foxes live in Vietnam, but thanks to the country’s diverse ecological system, there are some that live in this part of Asia; and some flying ones too.

The red fox is one of the most common types of fox globally, as it’s found in several of Earth’s regions, including North America, throughout Europe, and Asia. It’s also one of the largest types of fox and is distinct for its reddish-brown outer fur that can make it stand out on a snowy plain.

These animals are very intelligent, fast, and have a great sense of smell but are not known to be aggressive towards humans. In Vietnam, they are primarily found in the northern, colder parts.

A mature red fox can reach a maximum length of 70 cm/27.5 inches, a height of 45 cm/17.5 inches, and a weight of 5.5 kg/12 pounds. On average, they live three to four years and live in sandy, loose dirt dens.

Lyle’s Flying Fox is found in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and parts of China. As an adult, this bat averages about 23 cm/ 9 inches long and gets to be a weight of 0.3 kg/11 oz. Some of its defining features include dark brown wings and body and a collar of orange-ish fur.

Malayan Flying Foxes are very large, reaching a wingspan of 1.8 m/4 feet and a weight of 1 kg/2.2 lb. These animals can live up to three decades, have prominent facial features that resemble a fox, and are often found in habitats that have jungle-like or rainforest features.

The red fox and bat “foxes” are around in Vietnam, so keep your eyes peeled during any nature walks or time spent in the rural forested area.
