This coastal city in Central Vietnam is the third largest area in the country in terms of urbanization. The city with a population of more than 1.3 million serves as one of the major ports in the city and is becoming more and more popular with locals and tourists because of its beautiful sandy beaches.
Da Nang is located on the coast of South China Sea and served a long history being a French colonial port. It was also where the French first landed to conquer the country. During the War in Vietnam, Da Nang was used as a major air base for the United States air forces and South Vietnamese. It was one of the busiest airports in the world during that time.
Today, Da Nang is fast evolving following the steps of Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi into becoming one of the major tourists spots in Vietnam. However, most of the time, tourists go straight to the major cities and miss out what this “off beaten path” has to offer.
As one of the most popular tourist destinations, Da Nang boasts a number of terrific attractions unique to the region. Due to its relatively warmer climate, you can enjoy and Da Lat’s top things to do year round. It’s a fun coastal city to explore thanks to wonderful beaches, history and welcoming people.
This is a pilgrimage site, abundant with hills made up of limes and marbles. It also has caves, tunnels, and pagodas that are just waiting to be discovered. The Marble Mountains also known as “Five Elements Mountain” is approximately 7 km from the city center which makes it easily accessible if you’re just around the area. Plus, if you feel like going for a little hike, climbing up the summit will give you a bird’s eye view of the whole area.
Similar to other coastal cities, Da Nang is particularly most alive at night, and one of its biggest attractions is the Dragon Bridge. The dragon is more beautiful in the evening when it is lit up. Like a real dragon, tourists can wait for it to spit fire at 9 pm every night.
My Khe Beach
This is known to be Vietnam’s most beautiful beach thanks to 20-mile sandy white stretch. It was also once dubbed by Forbes magazine as “one of the most luxurious beaches in the world” because of big hotel names situated in this glorious hideaway. Aside from being host to high-end resorts, My Khe is also a good surfing spot.
My Son Sanctuary
If you are in Da Nang and have an hour to spare, this one should be a “must” in your list. It’s not everyday that you can visit the Angkor Wat in Cambodia but you can get to experience the “Angkor Wat of Vietnam” which is also included in the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. Here, you will discover the history of Southeast Asian civilization such as the Indians and Chinese.
Enjoy the beaches
Da Nang is surrounded by beaches and all you have to do is pick one or two during your stay and enjoy a quiet afternoon while you are there. The beaches are typically quite around 3 in the afternoon so you might want to take advantage of that.
Go ahead and rent a scooter and go on an adventure around the city. If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, you might be interested in availing the Hai Van Pass which is a 21 km mountain pass that will give you a spectacular view of the ocean. Mid-Autumn Moon Festival – Known in Vietnam as “Tet Trung Thu” this is one of the most popular festivals in the country and happens on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. This is similar to Halloween and Thanksgiving in western countries where children parade and sing on the streets while carrying colorful lanterns.
Whale Festival – This is an annual water festival for the fishermen in Quang Nam, a province in Da Nang. This is done for two days to ensure prosperity for the village. During this time, boats and houses are beautifully decorated and offerings at made at the whale temple by the village elders.
