Black River, Viet Nam

Black (Da) River – Northwest Vietnam

ShareTweet

The Black River, also known as “Da River,” is 910 km/565 miles long and stretches over both China and Vietnam. Roughly 427 km/265 miles of the river is in China, while the remaining portion flows through northwestern Vietnam, and it’s one of the most significant tributaries of the Red River.

In addition to traveling through the Lai Chau, Son La, and Hoa Binh provinces, the Black River is also dammed southwest of Hanoi to create the country’s largest dam that opened in 1994. The areas up and down the river are renowned for their unspoiled beauty and charm, with many spots offering stunning panoramic views and an abundance of wildlife.

Activities by the Sông Đà

Tourists to the northern part of Vietnam should explore some of the sights and activities near the Black River for some quality time outdoors.

River Cruises

Taking a riverboat cruise is an entertaining and exciting way to see much of Vietnam’s northside. Several cruises start in Halong and travel inward on various rivers, including the Black River. Not only is this a relaxing way to sightsee some of the most picturesque vistas in the country, but also many of the area’s wild animals and plants. Cruises stop at particular places along the rivers for opportunities to look around what’s on land at the different points.

Ba Vi National Park

The Black River runs along one side of Ba Vi National Park, making it an excellent place to admire the three-peaked mountain and abundance of tropical plants. In addition to the lush forests, an 11th-century shrine at the summit of Tan Viet is worth visiting if traveling through the area.

Hoa Binh Hydroelectric Dam

Hoa Binh is a northern province that the Black River runs through and is known for its wildlife and several valleys. Additionally, the Hoa Binh Hydroelectric Dam is situated just 5 km/3 miles from the river and makes for a great day trip for river cruisers or visitors to the Hoa Binh area.

Duong Lam Village

Located where the Black River and Red River meet, Duong Lam Village is an authentic rural village with lots of historic allure and classic architecture. Aside from walking the streets and admiring the sights, Duong Lam Village has many places to grab a bite of genuine local cuisine, too.
